Jags rout Wingate 83-70

GRU Augusta (9-2, 1-1) has put up some gaudy shooting statistics during individual games this season.  The Jaguars have made more than half of their three point attempts in 4 of 11 games and more than 40% in 7 of 11 en route to an impressive 43% clip for the season.

On the surface, the team's 69% shooting from deep in its 83-70 victory over Wingate seems to be the New Year's Eve story to tell.  And it is... in part.  The Jags actually didn't exclusively "live by the three."  And I suspect coach Dip Metress is happy for that because we all know the second part of that old quote!

Case in point:  senior Devonte Thomas (pictured above with coach Metress and Clint Bryant, GRU's Athletic Director).  After being honored before the game for recently scoring his 1,000th point as a Jaguar, Thomas got off to a great start from the field, as did the entire team.  The Jaguars made 8 of 10 threes in the first half and built a 50-26 lead at the break.







But Thomas missed one in the half after pump faking a defender who was running at him, stepping to the side and shooting a long jumper off the dribble.  Then Metress instructed Thomas to drive to the rim when the defense takes away the three.

And Devonte sure listened!  His next 10 points came at the rim and at the free throw line.  And the Jaguars attempted only 3 three pointers the entire second half.  The Jags shot 19 second half free throws, compared to 5 in the first half.






Sophomore Keshun Sherrill led the way with 18 points, while Thomas (16), Henry McCarthy (13) and D'Angelo Boyce (11) all scored in double figures as well.
