Senior Robert Drew nailed a three pointer with 20 seconds remaining to give Glenn Hills a 44-42 lead over Josey. And Timmy Sellers sealed the region victory by swatting away Josey's final attempt in Friday's AugBball Game of the Night.
Drew was determined to not let another close game slip away after his Spartans surrendered four games in December after leading by 10 or more points. "I feel like every game we lost was because we lost it ourselves... so I feel like that was the shot we needed to make to get us over the hump," Drew said after the game.
After losing overtime games to Josey and Lakeside in non region play, and dropping region contests first to Butler at home on a last second basket, and then to Laney in overtime, Sellers is hopeful his Spartans are developing winning habits: "We are learning how to win as a team and it feels great to get that one," said the 6'8" junior.
Josey led 40-34 in the fourth quarter behind the inspired play of Dominique Hurst, who led all scorers with 19 points, mostly on mid range jumpers off the dribble, and Javen Whitehead, who scored 10 points and rejected countless Spartan attempts.
Sellers closed the deficit with a striding two handed dunk that pulled Glenn Hills to within a point of Josey at 42-41 with 1:41 remaining, setting up Drew's heroics.
Glenn Hills improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Josey fell to 12-4, and 2-3 in class AA, region 4 action.
