Keshun Sherrill scored 28 points in Augusta's win Monday. |
Sherrill's second half spurt answered Clayton State's comeback attempt after the Jaguars grabbed a 48-38 halftime lead. Augusta, which won its prior three games mostly because of its defensive efforts, benefitted from an offensive explosion in the first half. Sherrill led the way in the first 20 minutes with 13 points. And Fields (12 points) and Monroe (9) combined for 21 points during that period. That duo's accuracy was remarkable as Monroe made 5 of 10 three pointers and Fields made 7 of 9 field goals for the game.
After Clayton State scored the game's first field goal, Augusta responded with a 12-0 run that gave the Jaguars an early 12-2 lead. After that, the Lakers would get no closer than 1 point at 63-62 when Sherrill gave the Jaguars breathing room by running off screens and nailing four straight jumpers in a three minute period.
The win keeps Augusta, which is riding a 4 game winning streak after dropping a pair of conference games on the road in December, at the top of the eastern division's standings heading into Saturday's game at Georgia College of the western division.
