Tyvez Monroe stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals Friday. |
Sophomores Deane Williams and Tyvez Monroe put away Friday's AugBball Game of the Day with a string of second half baskets to answer Mount Olive's late run, giving Augusta University a 82-67 season opening win at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. Senior Keshun Sherrill led the Jaguars with 22 points and 5 assists.
Williams scored 16 points, 8 of which came immediately after 17-4 Mount Olive run had shaved Augusta' 61-44 second half lead to 4 with less than 4 minutes remaining. The 6'7" post who drives, finishes, and passes with either hand also logged 14 rebounds, as well as two emphatic dunks and an assist on a Monroe three that gave the Jags a double digit lead with less than two minutes remaining, only moments after the outcome seemed to be in question.
Teammates were happy to get the news that Kyle Doyle (right) is eligible this season. |
The Jaguars also got timely contributions from junior transfer Kyle Doyle, a 6'6" forward who played at Georgia Southern for two seasons after attending Buford High School in the Atlanta area, and before that Augusta's T.W. Josey. Monroe and Williams told me the story about how Kyle, who scored 15 points in his first game as a Jag, and the players were made aware that Doyle would be eligible to play his final season this year instead of needing to sit out first.
Augusta will face host Barton College at 1:00 P.M. Saturday before heading back to Augusta ahead of the team's first home game, Thursday's 7:30 P.M. matchup against Claflin.
