Richmond's Three Musketeers Shine in Opening Night Victory

Richmond's DT Stephens scored 18 points in Tuesday's win.

Richmond got 24 points from senior Jason Weaver and 18 and 13, respectively, from junior DT Stephens and senior Moses Williams as the Musketeers dominated the second game of Tuesday's AugBball Game of the Night double-header with a 63-40 win over Grovetown.

Coach Steve Nobles told me before the game that he expected Weaver to play great after he was relatively quiet in Saturday's impressive team showing in a scrimmage game against South Carolina state champ AC Flora. Coach Nobles obviously knows his players. And Weaver is one whose praises Steve always sings. It's easy to see why because at 6'0" he attacks the basket and the offensive back boards like a much bigger player would. And he combines that ferocity with a nice shooting stroke, especially in the mid range.

Weaver scored 8 first quarter points when the Musketeers took a 17-10 lead into the second. Richmond then held Grovetown to 12 combined second and third quarter points, including a longer than 8 minute stretch without a field goal. The Musketeers coasted through the fourth quarter after taking a 49-22 lead at the end of three periods.

The lone bright spot for Grovetown was Eric Graham, who scored 12 of Grovetown's 13 first half points and 22 of the team's 40 for the game. Richmond will travel to College Park, Georgia, Friday to face Woodward Academy. Grovetown will meet Laney a week from Friday in the 100 Black Men Thanksgiving Classic at Paine.
