Aiken rolls over rival South Aiken in region opener

Devon Young scored 14 points in Aiken's win Tuesday.

Aiken's huge front line had its way with rival South Aiken Tuesday and the Hornets handled the Thoroughbreds 74-59 at home in each team's South Carolina class AAAA, region 4 opener. Devon Young, Isaiah Odom, and Jordan Lytes each scored 14 points as Aiken took a 42-30 halftime lead and spent most of the game ahead by double digits.

Young, Odom, and Kevin Williamson, who scored 9 points and made a lot of good things happen on both ends of the court, are three of at least four players in the rotation who are 6'5" tall or better. The Hornets had their way with their smaller opponents throughout the evening, much to the delight of the Aiken student section, which was bigger and more engaged than any high school crowd I've seen this season.

Jordan Lytes scored 14 ponts Tuesday.

Aiken hosts Midland Valley Friday. South Aiken is off until next Tuesday's home game against North Augusta. Regular season region games are even more important in South Carolina than they are in Georgia because South Carolina teams do not play region tournaments. So state tournament seeding is based on regular season region records.
