Brooks makes go ahead basket; Jags win Peach Belt home opener over Pembroke

Jashawn Brooks finished a baseline drive after being fouled and buried the free throw to give Augusta University a 69-66 lead with 38 seconds remaining in Saturday's home game against Peach Belt Conference foe Pembroke. The Jags held on to earn the 73-72 league win, the first in three tries for coach Dip Metress's young team.

Brooks, a freshman from Laney, was one of four Augusta raised players in the starting lineup. His go ahead basket broke the first tie of the game. Augusta led by 24 points early as Keshun Sherrill, the nation's third leading scorer, tallied 10 of his game high 26 points during a 113 second span in the first half at the end of which his Jags took a 33-12 lead.

After falling behind 40-16, Pembroke staged a furious comeback, cutting the deficit to 2 at 51-49 before Brooks made a three and Aquinas graduate Tamyrik Fields made four straight free throws to give Augusta a brief 7 point lead at 58-51.

Fields and Brooks scored 17 and 12 points, respectively, to add to Sherrill's 26.
