Aquinas Tops Westside for Third Win in Season's First Week; Lady IrishTake Fifth of last Six

Tre Gomillion drives past Justin Phillips in Saturday's AugBball Game of the Night.

Gerald Merriweather scored 21 points, and Tre Gomillion added 13 along with 13 rebounds as Aquinas weathered a fourth quarter Westside run to top the Patriots 64-62 on the road in the AugBball Game of the Night. Merriweather buried 5 threes while he and fellow junior guards Trent Bowdre (12 points and 8 rebounds) and Jelani Shakir (10 points and 7 assists) maintained the momentum gained in the game's first 12 minutes when Gomillion scored or assisted on 8 of the team's first 12 points and the Irish built a 25-9 first quarter lead.

Gomillion, a 6'2" bull of a guard, opened the scoring with a steal and a slam before spending most of the second and third quarters on the bench with foul trouble. During that stretch, the Irish's lead fluctuated between 6 and 16 while Westside's Justin Phillips, who led all scorers with 29 points, kept the Patriots within reach.

Back-to-back Westside threes, the first by Phillips and the second by Isaiah Bauman, cut Aquinas's advantage to 2 at 57-55 with 4:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Irish never trailed as Gomillion was able to make 3 of 4 fourth quarter free throws, the first pair earned after grabbing a difficult offensive rebound, and the second two came because of one of his two forced turnovers down the stretch.

Aquinas (3-0) finished an impressive first week of action with three victories. Westside has dropped three straight after opening the season with a win.

Lammers sinks two free throws to give the Lady Irish a road win

Senior Maura Lammers took the inbound pass and weaved through Westside's defense before drawing a foul and knocking down two free throws with 2.7 seconds to give Aquinas a 39-37 road win at Westside Saturday. Coach Luke Huesel was not surprised by her composure:

"She's our team captain. That's what she does. She's a penetrator. She's on the floor. Then she steps up and makes two when we need them."

Maura Lammers sank two free throws with 2.7 seconds remaining to seal the Irish win.

The win avenges an earlier loss to the Patriots in Aquinas's season opener. Aquinas has won 5 of 6 games since that opener. Cecilia McManus led all scorers with 14 points.
