"Twin Towers" Lead Cross Creek to 64-53 win over Grovetown

Cross Creek's "Twin Towers:" Kianni Westbrook (left) and Alana Davis (right)

Cross Creek's "twin towers," Alana Davis and Kianni Westbrook combined to score 40 points and grab 23 rebounds in Friday's 64-53 win over Grovetown in Friday's AugBball Game of the Night. Davis, who recently signed a national letter of intent with Memphis University, led all scorers with 27 points. And she snatched 14 rebounds in an inspired performance that included everything from a coast to coast score after a nifty spin move, to a back door feed to KymMia Thomas that she must have learned from Nya Daniels, her senior point guard of four seasons.

Daniels dished out 10 assists including a first half feed for a Thomas three pointer that made the crowd "ooh and ahh" after a mini dribbling exhibition right after she pulled down a defensive rebound and weaved through traffic in the open court before finding the sharp shooting senior guard. In the post game interview, coach Kim Schlein talked about Daniels' comfort level running the offense after four seasons of playing with Davis, whom she called a "strong force." Schlein also talked about the emergence of Westbrook, a 6'1" sophomore who scored 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Point Guard Nya Daniels: 7 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds

The win was a little more special than than most to Davis, the 6'2" center who proved herself to be unstoppable last season, averaging 22 points and 12 rebounds per game. After telling me in the post game interview how motivated she was "from the last game," I asked her if she meant last season's region title game, which Grovetown won to take a 2-1 season advantage over Cross Creek, or Tuesday's loss to North Augusta. Her response was perfect:

"Both of them! We should have won them all."

The next chance to for the Lady Razorbacks to remove any sour tastes from recent defeats comes Tuesday when Schlein's group visits undefeated North Augusta in a rematch of from last Tuesday's Lady Yellow Jackets' victory at Cross Creek.

AugBball Programming Note:

Grovetown, which like Cross Creek and North Augusta is playing an extremely difficult non-region schedule, hosts those same Lady Yellow Jackets today at 5:00 P.M. My partner Harold Doby will be there to provide AugBball Bonus Coverage while I am at the Westminster-Augusta Christian Garden City Classic championship game, which is today's AugBball Game of the Day.

Tuesday Harold will provide AugBball Bonus Coverage from North Augusta when Cross Creek's Lady Razorbacks visit while I share updates live from the AugBball Game of the Night, Alleluia's visit to Augusta Prep.

As you can see, I had to bring in help from an Augusta basketball veteran to take full advantage of the early Christmas present that is this round robin series of non-region games between three state title contending girls teams: Cross Creek, North Augusta, and Grovetown!
