North Augusta's Lady Yellow Jackets claim tournament crown and a 13-0 start to the season

Mya Burns's 12 third quarter points helped break open Wednesday's championship game.

North Augusta sophomore Mya Burns scored 12 third quarter points to help the Lady Yellow Jackets grab a 40-28 lead over Northwood before coasting through the final quarter to claim a 47-36 win and the Savannah River Shootout Christmas Classic crown in their home gym Wednesday. Junior Amari Young, an all-tournament selection, led the way with 15 points. Burns added 14, all in the second half.

Junior Sarah Crews, another all-tournament pick, made several momentum changing plays on the defensive end, which coach Crystal Cummings commented on in our post game interview. As did sophomore Aaliyah Bell, who took home the tournament MVP award.

Junior Sarah Crews hawked Northwood's ball handlers throughout Wednesday's win.

The Lady Yellow Jackets take a perfect (13-0) record, earned against the most difficult schedule any area team on the girls or boys side has played, into the break. The team is young, extremely skilled and athletic, and very well coached.

Amari Young has grabbed 4 steals per contest to go with her 14 points and 12 rebound averages.

When Northwood packed in a 2-3 zone and shaded Young, who entered the game averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds per game, Young and Burns picked apart the defense with a pair of high-low post connections for easy scores. Burns and Crews then made the necessary threes to lure the defense from the paint. And Crews consistently made life difficult for Northwood's guards with tenacious full court, man-to-man defense.

  1. These girls (lady jackets) are playing some good basketball. I am so proud of them and wish them continued success throughout the rest of the season.
