Augusta topped North Georgia 86-72 Tuesday in front of a special home crowd consisting of more than 2,000 screaming fifth graders that were transported in for "Education Day," the fourth such event in as many years, marking what has become an annual tradition at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Augusta's young fans came ready to cheer on the Jags
"This (Education Day) will be one of the things I'm most proud of," Augusta head coach Dip Metress told me before the game as the Richmond County elementary school students filed in and Metress's players warmed up while wearing shirts over their uniforms with "Readers are Leaders" printed in big letters on the front.
Metress can also be proud of his team, which made 53% of its field goals and 58% of its three pointers and led by double digits almost the entire second half of what was Augusta's fourth straight win and third Peach Belt Conference win in three league games. Juniors Deane Williams (24 points on 10-11 shooting, 10 rebounds, 4 blocked shots) and Aaron Byrd (career high 19 points on 7 of 9 shooting) led the way for the Jaguars (6-3, 3-0), who are off until their January 30 road game at Clayton State.
