Lakeside's Kalen Williams scored a game high 22 points in Friday's win. |
Kalen Williams scored 22 points, Tyshun Briscoe added 16, and Rickey McGhee chipped in 13 as Lakeside topped Greenbrier 70-61 at home in both teams' region opener. The Panthers improved to 7-3 overall, and the Wolfpack fell to 8-2. Austin Canaday (20 points) and Richard Crawford III (19) paced Greenbrier.
Williams and senior Brad Hilley made a pair of three pointers on the first two possessions of the third quarter to give the Panthers a 36-31 lead with 7:14 remaining in the third, which was up until that time the largest lead either team had held. After the lead ballooned to 10 just before the end of the third quarter, Greenbrier's Crawford and Justin Stevens combined to score 8 straight points and cut the deficit to 2 when Stevens' three point play made it 46-44 with 7:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Richard Crawford scored 19 points Friday. |
But 10 points in the final period by Williams and 8 from McGhee, a freshman, was too much for the Wolfpack to overcome. Briscoe found Tucker Gilbert for a layup to give the Panthers a 63-52 lead with 3:12 remaining, and Greenbrier failed to make another run.
Tyshun Briscoe scored 16 points Friday. |
The play of Briscoe, a sophomore, was especially important during the first half when Lakeside struggled to score. The sharp shooting guard made a pair of threes and scored 8 total second quarter points to help ignite the Panthers' offense, which scored 23 second quarter points after managing only 7 in the first 8 minutes. After the game I interviewed Briscoe and McGhee, who played like veterans in their first region contest.
