Evans tops Grovetown on the road in thrilling region opener

These game highlights begin with the game's final moments and work back towards the beginning...

Cameron Cabarrus made a deep three pointer off the dribble with 15 seconds remaining, and his 6’9” teammate Dylan Cardwell swatted away Grovetown’s final attempt to give Evans a 58-57 win in both teams’ region opener Saturday. The last minute heroics were badly needed after Evans had surrendered a fourth quarter lead following Christian Chambers’ exit from the game because of a nasty fall suffered on what may have been the most impressive play of this high school season.

With 4:30 remaining in the game, Chambers slammed home a swooping one-handed dunk in transition to give the Knights a 52-48 lead before crashing to the ground after being knocked out of the air high above the rim. Chambers reportedly suffered a concussion. Grovetown took control with a 9-3 run that lasted from the time Chambers left the game until the final 15 seconds when Cabarrus and Cardwell saved the day.

Cabarrus led all scorers with 23 points. Chambers, a sophomore, added 13. And Cardwell, also a sophomore, showed why he leads the area in rebounding and blocked shots, patrolling the paint and rejecting shots throughout the heated rivalry game.

Eric Graham’s 16 points led Grovetown. Nick Tolbert added 13. Evans (5-4, 1-0) hosts Hephzibah Tuesday, and Grovetown (4-5, 0-1) will take a break until their December 28 game against Lake Nona in Evans’ holiday tournament.
